Thank you for your interest in Wilderness Passages (WP). WP is a collaborative experience led by 4 Elements Earth Education (4EEE) and Riekes Nature. Lead instructors are Rick Berry (4EEE) and (Riekes). This camp is designed for male and female youth, ages 12-15 as an experience that focuses on four individual challenges of nature. This experience is an invite or application registration for students with the necessary background experience and who are showing indicators of being ready for this experience. Being a "passage" type program we realize the value and important role that a community and family provides for the youth before and after their experience.
What is Wilderness Passages?
Every human has four elemental needs: shelter, water, fire and food. All of our ancestors were deeply connected to these needs. They understood them, knew how to find and create them, and they knew how to pass on the essential skills for these elements to the next generation. Without this lineage we would not be here today. Our modern world seems to have forgotten much of this. Wilderness Passages is a week-long journey for youth ages 11-14 where they learn to reconnect with these skills. Learning these skills creates confidence, self sufficiency, and transformation. It is our human birthright. We light the ceremonial fire for each of these passages and provide parental guidance for ways to support this transformation in the youth before and after the passages.
The 4 Rites of Nature / The Sacred Order of Survival
The week-long is centered around four challenges:
Indicators of Readiness and Prerequisites
Prerequisites: Participants need to have the following prerequisite experience.
Indicators for readiness
We recognize that determining when a person is ready (at the right “age”) for a coming of age/rite of passage experience can be subjective. The WP is intended to be an experience that helps recognize the transition from boyhood/girlhood to adolescence. This is a time of transition from a place of higher dependency (on parents/adults around them) to a place of more independence, confidence, and self sufficiency. Nature, and the 4 elemental challenges of WP, is a great facilitator for this experience. Some of the indicators (but not limiting to participate) in this experience may include:
Parents will need to apply on behalf of their son/daughter for Wilderness Passages. Part of the application process will include conversations with parents to answer questions and assess the readiness of their son or daughter.
Families will need to provide transportation to the site (High Sierra Mountains). Drop off will be 4 pm, Sunday June 9. Pick up will be 12 noon Friday June 14, 2019.
All food will be provided from dinner Sunday through breakfast Friday. Packing lists will be sent following acceptance into the program.
Program Cost: $750 (Includes food, site fees, and instruction for the 6 day event). Limited partial scholarship are available.

If you recognize some of these indicators in your son/daughter and they meet the prerequisites, they may be ready for this experience.
Logistics
Wilderness Passages is a collaboration between 4 Elements Earth Education (4EEE) and Riekes Nature. There is a max of 12 participants spots from each program (total 24 youth), with intended balance of male and female participants. Both genders will share food and time in camp between each of the passages, with separate camps at all other times. During each of the 4 passages the genders will separate with lead instructors leading separate experiences. Each program will provide male and female lead instructors for the event (see instructors listed above).

The 4 Rites of Nature / The Sacred Order of Survival
The week-long is centered around four challenges:
- Shelter: building and sleeping in survival shelters made from the land
- Water: finding and purifying water, wandering watersheds and connecting to water through awareness challenges
- Fire: Learning to make fire from the land and tending a solo overnight fire
- Food: spending an entire day relying on food gathered from the land
Indicators of Readiness and Prerequisites
Prerequisites: Participants need to have the following prerequisite experience.
- Connection/Experience/relation to One of the Programs. We (instructors) need to have some level of connection with the student. The instructors from 4EEE are Rick Berry and Abby Cerino, and from Riekes Dylan, and Audra.
- Nature Background. This is not a “beginner’s” program. Participants need to have some previous experience with nature programs/training that is exhibited by their knowledge/experience with regional hazards, awareness, common sense, and skills in nature.
- Camping Experience. Participants must have had previous experience camping
- Ceremonial Aspect. Each of the 4 Rites of Nature are recognized as individual challenges, an opportunity for transformation, and deep reflection. A ceremonial fire will be lit to “send off” and “welcome back” participants from each of these challenges.

- Growth stages indicating the onset of adolescence/puberty
- Behaviors indicating a desire for more independence (“rebellion” can be viewed in this context)
- Risk taking, or being more bold in their behavior/bodies/actions
- Wanting independence and to do things more for themselves
- Transitioning out of a lot of younger interests (games/toys/hobbies) and into newer interests.
